Make a birthday mixtape
A birthday tape is the gift that costs nothing and takes an hour of actually thinking about someone, which is the point. Nobody re-reads a gift card.
When
Any birthday. It works especially well for the person who says they don't want anything.
What to put on it
- ♪A song from the year they were born. Make it a good one, not a joke. Or a joke.
- ♪The song that was everywhere the year you met.
- ♪A song they introduced you to, with a thank-you in the note.
- ♪A song you think describes their year ahead.
- ♪Something from their favorite artist they might not know.
The letter
Start with one thing they did this year that you noticed. End with what you hope for them next year.
How it works
- 1. Name the tape. “For Dad.” “Road trip ’26.” “Songs I couldn’t say out loud.” The title is the cover, so say what it is.
- 2. Add the songs, up to 20. Search any song, tap to add. Write a liner note on each one if you want: why this song, why them, why now. The notes are the gift.
- 3. Write the letter. Every tape has a J-card, the fold-out card in a cassette case. Yours holds a letter only they will read, in your words, signed by you.
- 4. Flip it to a secret link and send. One link, sendable by text, email, or carrier pigeon screenshot. It is never on your profile and search engines cannot find it. Only the person holding the link can open it.
They open it like a letter: your title, your note, then the songs in your order. Every track plays a 30-second preview, and one tap opens it in their own player. No app, no account needed to listen. When they're done they can send a thanks back, or make you a whole tape in return.
Send it the night before, so it's waiting when they wake up.
Start this tape, always freeAbout ten minutes. No app to install.
