Make a Thanksgiving mixtape
Thanksgiving is the one holiday that is literally about saying thank you, and most of us still just say pass the potatoes. Make a tape for the person you're most thankful for this year, or one for the whole table to play while the food gets cold.
When
The week of Thanksgiving, so it's there for the drive and the cooking. Friendsgiving, any weekend in November. Or the Friday after, as the thank-you you didn't get to say at dinner.
What to put on it
- ♪One song for each person at the table. Say whose is whose in the notes.
- ♪The song from the moment this year you're most thankful for, and why.
- ♪Something for the kitchen while everything's in the oven.
- ♪The song your family can't agree on. It stays on the tape.
- ♪For Friendsgiving: the song from the night this group became a group.
- ♪One for the person who isn't at the table this year.
The letter
Name one thing each person did this year that you noticed. A thank-you lands harder when it's specific.
How it works
- 1. Name the tape. “For Dad.” “Road trip ’26.” “Songs I couldn’t say out loud.” The title is the cover, so say what it is.
- 2. Add the songs, up to 20. Search any song, tap to add. Write a liner note on each one if you want: why this song, why them, why now. The notes are the gift.
- 3. Write the letter. Every tape has a J-card, the fold-out card in a cassette case. Yours holds a letter only they will read, in your words, signed by you.
- 4. Flip it to a secret link and send. One link, sendable by text, email, or carrier pigeon screenshot. It is never on your profile and search engines cannot find it. Only the person holding the link can open it.
They open it like a letter: your title, your note, then the songs in your order. Every track plays a 30-second preview, and one tap opens it in their own player. No app, no account needed to listen. When they're done they can send a thanks back, or make you a whole tape in return.
Play it after dinner, while nobody's ready to do the dishes.
Start this tape, always freeAbout ten minutes. No app to install.
