Make a mixtape for someone going through it

When someone is going through it, you want to do something and most things are wrong. A tape is right. It says I'm here, it asks nothing back, and it plays at 2 a.m. when nothing else helps.

When

A breakup, theirs or the kind you've been through too. A loss. A diagnosis, a hospital stay, a stretch of bad luck. The week after, when everyone else has gone quiet.

What to put on it

  • ♪Songs that sit with the feeling, not ones that argue with it. Skip the ones about looking on the bright side.
  • ♪A song that got you through your own bad year, with a note saying so.
  • ♪Something quiet for the middle of the night.
  • ♪One song that's a hand on the shoulder. You'll know it.
  • ♪Toward the end, one song that points forward, gently.

The letter

Keep the letter short and the promise specific: I'm here, here's when I'll check in, here's what I can do.

How it works

  1. 1. Name the tape. “For Dad.” “Road trip ’26.” “Songs I couldn’t say out loud.” The title is the cover, so say what it is.
  2. 2. Add the songs, up to 20. Search any song, tap to add. Write a liner note on each one if you want: why this song, why them, why now. The notes are the gift.
  3. 3. Write the letter. Every tape has a J-card, the fold-out card in a cassette case. Yours holds a letter only they will read, in your words, signed by you.
  4. 4. Flip it to a secret link and send. One link, sendable by text, email, or carrier pigeon screenshot. It is never on your profile and search engines cannot find it. Only the person holding the link can open it.

They open it like a letter: your title, your note, then the songs in your order. Every track plays a 30-second preview, and one tap opens it in their own player. No app, no account needed to listen. When they're done they can send a thanks back, or make you a whole tape in return.

You don't need the perfect songs. You need to have made it.
