How to make a mixtape online, free

Pick up to 20 songs, write a note on each one and a letter on the J-card, and send one secret link. That is the whole thing. It takes about ten minutes on your phone, costs nothing, needs no app, and the songs open in their Spotify, Apple Music or YouTube Music.

The four steps

  1. 1. Name the tape

โ€œFor Dad.โ€ โ€œRoad trip โ€™26.โ€ โ€œSongs I couldnโ€™t say out loud.โ€ The title is the cover, so say what it is.

  2. 2. Add the songs, up to 20

Search any song, tap to add. Write a liner note on each one if you want: why this song, why them, why now. The notes are the gift.

  3. 3. Write the letter

Every tape has a J-card, the fold-out card in a cassette case. Yours holds a letter only they will read, in your words, signed by you.

  4. 4. Flip it to a secret link and send

One link, sendable by text, email, or carrier pigeon screenshot. It is never on your profile and search engines cannot find it. Only the person holding the link can open it.

What you need

  • A phone or computer with a browser. No app to install.
  • An email address to sign in with. No password, ever.
  • The songs. Search by title or artist; every song in the iTunes catalog is there.
  • Ten minutes, and something to say.

Where the songs come from

SFtunes does not host music. Each song on a tape carries its 30-second preview and a link that opens the full song in the listener's own music app. That is why there is nothing to pay and nothing to download, on either end: the music they hear is the music they already have.

Questions people ask

Is it really free to make a mixtape online?
Yes. SFtunes is free, with no card, no trial and no paid tier. Making a tape, sending it and listening to it cost nothing.
Do I need to download an app?
No. It works in the browser on your phone or computer. If you like, you can add sftunes.com to your home screen and it behaves like an app.
Does the person I send it to need an account?
No. The secret link opens for anyone who has it. They can play every song's preview on the page and send a thank-you back without signing up.
Which music apps does it work with?
Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Music. Every song on the tape opens in the listener's own app with one tap, and they can turn the whole tape into a playlist there.
How many songs can a mixtape hold?
Up to 20 songs, each with its own liner note, plus a letter on the J-card. That is about as long as a real cassette side.
Can they hear the whole song?
A 30-second preview of every song plays right on the tape. The full song opens in their own music app. SFtunes never hosts or streams full songs.
Is my mixtape private?
By default a tape is a secret link: it is not on your profile, search engines cannot find it, and only someone holding the link can open it. You can also make a tape public if you want to share it with everyone.
Can I write a message on it?
Yes. Each song can carry a liner note saying why you picked it, and the tape has a letter and a dedication, the way a cassette had a J-card.
Can they make one back?
Yes. Every tape ends with a Make one back button. The oldest answer to a mixtape is a mixtape.
How do I send it?
Any way you send a link: text message, email, WhatsApp, a note in a lunchbox. It is one link.
